But one thing it didn t envision was music for white supremacists. And the company says it will block any traffic redirected to its site from a white supremacist s blog. Believe me a white supremacist group is the last t! hing in the world we want to be associated with said Ed Seeger chairman and co founder of American Media Services Interactive which is based in Mount Pleasant. The company s offerings include TheRADIO.com which streams channels of music to the Internet. A link to the site appears on the blog of Hal Turner a white supremacist from North Bergen N.J. who organized a rally of supremacist groups in Kalamazoo Mich. last year and a neo Nazi rally in Kingston N.Y. in . Turner ended his Internet radio show last summer but continues a blog under the heading Honest talk in a time of universal deceit. As all of you know there is a special place in my heart for radio with me having given years of my life to that endeavor he wrote in a Nov. entry. At that time Turner wrote I am pleased to announce the launch of The Radio.com and added if you like this and appreciate it perhaps you ll consider sending a small donation Turner s address followed. American Media said Monday it was considerin! g legal action because the blog made it appear Turner had developed TheRADIO.com. After being contacted by The Associated Press Turner changed the blog late Monday. It now reads even though I do not own or operate TheRadio.com if you like that I turned you on to this information perhaps you ll consider sending a small donation Turner wrote in an e mail to the AP that having now reread what I originally wrote I can see how it could have been misunderstood. I apologize for the possible misunderstanding. He added he routinely solicits contributions but has received none as a result of TheRADIO.com link. I have no desire whatsoever to profit off the hard work of others he wrote. Seeger said he was alarmed that a white supremacist was linking to the site. The irony there is of course that on TheRADIO.com we have several sites that feature black artists he said. LOUIS Chicago Cubs pitchers Rich Harden and Carlos Zambrano remained on track for starts later this week good news for the struggling NL Central leaders. Manager Lou Piniella said Tuesday their absences had a lot to do with the Cubs slide entering a t! hree game series against the St. Louis Cardinals . Zambrano Harden With Harden we ve given him a nice rest for two turns and hopefully he ll finish up strong Piniella said before the Cubs lost again on Tuesday. Zambrano is basically the same thing. Sure it s a relief. Not only do you lose two starting pitchers but you lose two middle men. Harden with a . ERA since joining the Cubs on July in a six player deal with Oakland is set to rejoin the rotation on Thursday. He missed one start with discomfort in his arm. Zambrano was scheduled to go Saturday after missing one turn. Harden threw a side session on Monday and Zambrano threw Tuesday. Zambrano with a . ERA missed his last start with shoulder inflammation and rotator cuff tendinitis. The pitching staff also has been hurt by reliever Chad Gaudin s back injury. Gaudin with a . ERA is in Arizona working out after seeing a team physician in Chicago on Monday who diagnosed nothing serious wrong. He said he gets a tingling down in his buttocks when he throws the ball Piniella said. His absence has ! hurt us in the middle. Piniella said he was not concerned about closer Kerry Wood who has a blown save and two losses in his last two appearances while allowing five runs and five hits with three walks in innings. Mainly he chose not to be concerned. You know the amazing thing about managing a baseball team If you re a little bit of a worry wart you have something to worry about every single day Piniella said. Halfway through the year you need a psychiatrist and by the end of the year you need a bed. So no I m not concerned about anything. Not even about the team s recent woes. Piniella noted the Cubs face the three teams chasing them in the Central St. Louis Houston and Milwaukee the next nine games. We ve gotten ourselves in good position. The doctor assured him everything was fine. Piniella also said he d give struggling Kosuke Fukudome batting . in his last games at least one start in the Cardinals series after leaving him out of the lineup for the third time in five games. We re just giving him time off to relax a little bit more than anything Piniella said. The Cubs recalled outfielder Felix Pie from Triple A Iowa and purchased the contract of right hander Randy Wells from Iowa moving pitcher Jon Lieber to the day disabled list to make room on the man roster. Wells started on Sunday and will be available in the bullpen later in the week Piniella said. Last year Richard Branson chairman of the Virgin Group acquired a majority stake in the company formerly called CircleLending. Unlike a traditional bank which pools its available lending funds from various sources Virgin Money organizes and processes loans ! among family friends and business associates. The company says it has originated million in loans since and has grown percent in the last months. Skip to next paragraph Enlarge This Image Asheesh Advani Asheesh Advani the president and chief executive of Virgin Money recently discussed the impact that the turmoil in the credit housing and student loan markets was having on his business. Following are excerpts from the interview. Q. What was the impetus to start Virgin Money What was your intention A. I had worked at World Bank and had the idea to create a company to manage informal finance. The origins were inspired by some market research on the number of transactions among friends family and business associates. We discovered that the volume in the United States was billion in person to person loan transactions. Q. How has the recent upheaval in the credit markets influenced your lending practices A. It s encouraged borrowers to consider alternatives to traditional lender! s. They care more about the interest rate they re paying. Two years ago if business borrowers were looking at sources of financing they had a few options. Today they have no options if they are a start up and very few options if they ve been in business and have a mediocre credit score. I think it s also encouraged potential lenders who are affluent individuals to recognize that they can get to percent by loaning money to their kids rather than to percent in the bank. Q. There are always going to be some who are reluctant to be in debt to their family and friends. How have you been able to overcome that resistance A. We make people realize that having that awkward conversation can save you thousands of dollars and keep the interest in the family. Q. How do you make money A. We have a loan setup fee which starts at for a basic unsecured loan and goes up to for mortgages. We charge per payment to administer the loan either by quarter per month or annually depending on how they repay the loan. Q. How has the increasing popularity of social sites ! like MySpace LinkedIn and Facebook influenced your growth A. We believe we are part of a trend which we call social finance. It capitalizes on the connectedness of individuals. In the future we believe this will also translate into social savings. Groups of individuals will help you save toward a goal like buying a home like starting a business like saving for your kid s education. It s the next generation plan. Q. There have been reports that lenders have stopped offering federal student loans to some colleges and are making it tougher for less creditworthy borrowers to qualify for private college loans. What was the reason you decided to enter the student loan market A. We believe there is an enormous opportunity for Virgin Money to help students and their families. For example parents can borrow money through federal programs like PLUS loans at a lower rate than students can borrow from private lending sources. We can help the family get the best deal and their student c! an repay parents in a flexible manner after graduation. Q. Recently Fynanz.com and Greennote.com entered the market to focus exclusively on student lending. Where do you see the student lending market heading A. It s a national challenge to find ways to fund the higher and higher costs of education. The returns on education are clear but they are not distributed across the full spectrum of type of major geography of student and credit score. The underwriting models in financial services are so focused on just the credit score that it doesn t translate well to the student loan financing market. You can t just score the parent and score the student and magically understand the credit worthiness of the applicant. We believe that character based loans where people know the student do make a contribution to helping the proper underwriting of the creditworthiness of a student. Q. Are mortgages also character based A. We have two products in mortgage a family mortgage and a retirement mortgage which is a reverse mortgage. A family mortgage enables ki! ds to get a loan from their parents at a lower rate than they could get from the bank. We say you should combine that with a traditional first mortgage so that your blended rate is better than you can get from anybody else. You deduct the interest payments you make to your parents just like you can deduct the interest payments you make to a bank. Q. There has been concern in the mortgage markets about home equity lines of credit. What is the prospect for a reverse mortgage when there is so much uncertainty A. We introduced a product we call a retirement mortgage. It allows the adult kids and the retired parents to do a deal among themselves and keep the home within the family. It s at least percent cheaper than a bank reverse mortgage. Q. How do you figure that A. Bank reverse mortgages start at in cost and our product is a couple thousand dollars plus a month. All and all it will be less than percent of the cost of a bank reverse mortgage. Game on . for now. The season opening football game between LSU and Appalachian State remained set for p.m. Saturday in Tiger Stadium after Gov. Bobby Jindal announced on Thursday that a possible contraflow lane reversal evacuation through Baton Rouge would not happen until Sunday at the earliest since Gustav forecasts do not have landfall until Tuesday. On Wednesday forecasts had a Monday landfall between Florida and Texas and Jindal said there could be contraflow on Saturday which would have meant a possible postponement of the LSU Appalachian State game that is scheduled to be nationally televised by ESPN. Col. Mike Edmondson of the Louisiana State Police had said Wednesday that it would have been very difficult to have an LSU football game during contraflow with people on campus. Where we are today Thursday based on the landfall projections made today Thursday we re not anticipating that they would have to make any changes to the game Jindal said at a press conference Th! ursday afternoon at the Federal Emergency Management Agency downtown. But again I want to emphasize that our first concerns will have to be our people s safety. Jindal said plans could change over the next hours though depending on the path of Gustav which was nearing hurricane strength after hitting Jamaica Thursday. If you see contraflow time changes if you see evacuation plan changes because of changes in the storm s tracking pattern or intensity certainly that could be changed Friday Jindal said. But as we stand here today from talking to LSU neither LSU nor the state at this point sees the need to make a change. That could change by Friday but it may not change Friday . Jindal said today would be the deadline for any decision concerning the LSU game. It s LSU s call on any postponement Edmondson said. We can make a strong recommendation. Hundreds of thousands of Shi ite pilgrims streamed home from Iraq s shrine city of Kerbala on Sunday at the end of an annual holy rite that passed without the factional violence that marred it last year. But a major suicide bomb attack on U.S. backed neighborhood guards in a Sunni Arab area of northern Baghdad served as a reminder of entrenched violence in the country. The bomber rode on a bicycle to a checkpoint manned by the guards in the Adhamiya neighborhood and detonated an explosive vest killing people and wounding . Among the dead was a leader of the guards in the area Faruq Abu Omar. Police had earlier said the bomber rode a motorcycle. I carried my nephew in my arms to the hospital. He was alive until we reached the hospital and his blood stained my clothes Abu Omar s uncle Ahmed Abu Uday told Reuters by telephone his voice breaking with tears. The guards known as Sons of Iraq are paid by U.S. forces to protect neighborhoods in areas where the local tribes have turn! ed against al Qaeda Sunni Arab militants. The militants frequently strike their checkpoints. What happened is what we feared would happen because this area was the stronghold of al Qaeda in Adhamiya. We killed them we captured them. We destroyed them. And we expected they would seek revenge said Abu Uday. AL QAEDA STILL ABLE TO ATTACK Iraq has become far less violent over the past year but U.S. and Iraqi forces say al Qaeda retains the ability to carry out car bombings and suicide attacks . Sunni militants are suspected of being behind strikes which killed more than pilgrims heading to the Shi ite Sha abiniya rite including a suicide bombing on Thursday in which died. But the ritual itself in Kerbala was peaceful authorities said. Last year Shi ite militia and police clashed during the pilgrimage leading to major gun battles in Kerbala s streets. At the conclusion of the rite overnight believers crowded the banks of a river that flows into the Euphrates floating lit candles! on the water under a full moon. Pilgrims then began to pack into buses to leave Kerbala km miles south of Baghdad which was under the tight watch this week of some Iraqi police and soldiers backed by snipers helicopters and bomb sniffing dogs. The birthday of the ninth century Imam Mohammed al Mehdi is one of several annual pilgrimages that have evolved into shows of strength for Iraq s majority Shi ite community since the fall of Sunni Arab dictator Saddam Hussein who curbed such rites. Previous pilgrimages have seen some of the highest profile attacks of the war. But there was no repeat of last year s Shi ite factional fighting which turned the area around the shrine into a battle zone for days and prompted influential Shi ite cleric Moqtada al Sadr to declare a ceasefire for his Mehdi army militia. A decline in overall violence in Iraq and government coffers swollen with oil wealth have raised hopes the country can finally undertake much needed reconstruction projects. International oil companies are eager to get their hands on the world s! third largest oil reserves which have been off limits to them for decades. But a U.S. diplomat in Baghdad said the first contracts six short term oil deals expected to be worth up to billion total are likely to be scrapped. The deals are less lucrative for the oil companies than long term deals which are due to go up for tender next year and negotiations have stalled. OTTAWA ONTARIO Aug MARKET WIRE via COMTEX The Honourable Diane Finley Minister of Citizenship and Immigration met today with national stakeholders from business industry labour and non governmental organizations to discuss occupational priorities for immigration purposes. This national round table was an opportunity to hear from key experts from a n! ational perspective. It was an important element of cross Canada consultation sessions with provinces territories and stakeholders including ethnic and immigrant serving organizations over the past month. Today s consultations focused on identifying critical occupational shortages in trades and professions across Canada the role of immigration in responding to them and any barriers to foreign credential accreditation. This information will help develop instructions for immigration officers on occupations that are identified for priority processing. The ministerial instructions to be issued this fall will focus on applications in the federal skilled worker category. There are shortages of workers in many professions and trades. These broad consultations with stakeholders have provided us with a picture of the most common and acute pressures across the country and how immigration can play a role in addressing them said Minister Finley. Our government is committed to helping n! ewcomers and their families succeed when they come to Canada. Their success is our success. Following discussions with participants the Minister emphasized the importance of provincial and territorial initiatives to better recognize foreign credentials in Canada. We can t prioritize occupations and professions in demand if there isn t the necessary support and training available to help newcomers begin work in their chosen fields said Minister Finley. The Minister reiterated that the instructions will not affect refugee protection nor are they intended to affect the government s objectives for family reunification. In fact Canada already gives priority to applications from many family members such as sponsored spouses and dependants. Eighty percent of these cases are finalized within eight months. Reuniting families remains a priority for this government said Minister Finley. We need to ensure that Canada continues to balance the needs of our Canadian industries in terms of labour shortages and family reunification for our newcomers. As face t! o face meetings with all stakeholders were not feasible the public was invited to submit its input online. Citizenship and Immigration Canada CIC received over submissions. This feedback along with the input provided during the regional and national round table consultations will inform the development of the ministerial instructions. Consultations were also held with Human Resources and Social Development Canada and the Bank of Canada. The instructions follow on budget commitments to modernize the immigration system to respond to Canada s labour market needs reduce wait times for new applicants and reduce the backlog of immigration applications. The budget allocates million over five years to help meet these goals. With this funding CIC has begun recording occupational information for applications in the current skilled worker backlog. The Department will be referring applications of interest to the provinces and territories for possible processing under the Provincial Nom! inee Program. CIC is also working toward increasing capacity and efficiency in missions with the largest backlogs centralizing the receipt of applications and reconfirming the intentions of applicants facing the longest wait times. The instructions based on these consultations will be published in the Canada Gazette and available on the CIC website at www.cic.gc.ca . They will also be tabled in Parliament as part of the annual report on immigration. The upscale French fashion house Givenchy will help dress Madonna for her upcoming Sticky Sweet world tour a spokeswoman for the label said Tuesday. Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci worked with the pop star to create two outfits one of which Madonna is expected to wear during an opening number Givenchy spokeswoman Caroline Deroche Pasquier said. The opening outfit is a frock coat in black stretch satin she said. The other ensemble to be worn in the third act of Madonna s is a long cape worn over a black dress embellished with colored ribbons to give it a Gypsy look she said. Now by dropping a sweetened . billion bid for the company he may be adopting the toughest tactic of all. In recent weeks many analysts had expected Microsoft to escalate the fight by starting a ! hostile takeover bid. But in a recent meeting with Microsoft employees Ballmer seemed to suggest that a proxy fight was a relatively unpalatable option.
