Report Apple plans nonexclusive iPhone deal in Italy InfoWorld via Yahoo News

Telecom Italia has signed a nonexclusive deal to distribute Apple s iPhone in Italy and the phone will be a newer model compatible with G third generation networks according to a report Monday in the Rome daily newspaper La Repubblica. Apple CEO Steve Jobs has decided to modify the company s distribution strategy of choosing an exclusive partner in each national market and taking a share of the operator s traffic revenue La Repubblica said. Telecom Italia CEO Franco Bernabe signed an agreement in Cupertino California at the beginning of April the newspaper said. For ongoing coverage about the Apple iPhone check out InfoWorld s special report . However Telecom Italia declined to comment Tuesday on the report. We haven t been commenting and I can t tell you when we might be likely to do so a Telecom Italia spokeswoman said. The agreement provides for the distribution of iPhones compatible with G third generation networks based on the European UMTS Universal Mobile Telecommunic! ations System standard and the handsets will be sold at a higher price than elsewhere to compensate for the absence of revenue sharing La Repubblica said. While the agreement is nonexclusive Telecom Italia has the G technology ready immediately giving it an advantage of several months over Italian competitors Vodafone and H G the paper said. The newspaper put the change of direction down to a realization at Apple that boosting the market share of its Safari browser could be more important than short term revenue gains from phone sales. The deal reflects Italy s lead in G penetration and mobile Internet navigation with Telecom Italia having more than double the number of G users than the principal mobile phone operators in France Britain and Spain the paper said. One of the greatest differences is the respect the fighters generally show each other in MMA. You could have two guys who are fighting each other ride from the hotel to the arena in the same van and not have a problem which would definitely not be the case with most boxers. Having said that I was shocked when I read an interview that Bryan Levick at Fight Ticker did with UFC middleweight Pete Sell. You should know that Sell is a close friend of UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra who defends his belt on Saturday at UFC in Montreal against former champion Georges St. Pierre. In the interview Sell called St. Pierre a mental midget and questioned his heart. GSP is an awesome athlete Sell was quoted as saying. He has all the tools to dominate but he is a mental midget his mentality is very weak. He is a very nice guy and I have hun! g out with him but I don t like the way he flip flopped after the first fight with Serra. GSP was cool right after the fight but about five weeks afterwards he started making excuses saying he didn t train properly then GSP retracted and said Serra was the better man that night. Well what was it I don t like how his story changed. I believe that all the pressure is on GSP especially considering he is fighting in front of his countrymen. Serra thrives on the pressure and likes the underdog role. Matt Serra is all heart and GSP is the type of guy that if they were in a bar GSP would back down from a fight while Serra is down for whatever. Now Sell was undoubtedly sticking up for his friend and he deserves credit for that. But his comments were at best ill advised. And he shouldn t be attacking someone like St. Pierre who is one of the sport s elite athletes and No. in the most recent Yahoo Sports rankings without something approaching a similar resume himself. Sell is but he s lost three in a row and four of his last five. Before he talks smack ! about anyone else he ought to make sure he s solved all of his own problems. Also B.J. has the experience of fighting at a higher weight class.Your opinion good sire Hayden Fitzgerald Sydney Australia Before St. Pierre thinks about fighting anyone else he needs to worry about getting past Serra on Saturday. But assuming he does it s still premature to talk about a m! iddleweight match between Silva and St. Pierre. There are still a number of fights at welterweight that would be interesting for St. Pierre and of course a fight with Penn moving up would be huge. As for your scenario about Penn having a better shot against Silva than St. Pierre I have massive respect for Penn s all around game so I don t discount that out of hand. I think the size would be too much for either St. Pierre or Penn but if anyone could move up and beat Silva from a lower weight class these are the two who could do it. SILVA AT LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT Do you think anybody in the light heavyweight stands a chanceagainst the ultimate Anderson Silva Lance Curry Fords N.J. That s a pound leap from middleweight to light heavyweight so I think it would be a tough division for Silva. The guys will be able to handle his strikes better than the smaller men can. I d say guys like Quinton Rampage Jackson Forrest Griffin Shogun Rua Wanderlei Silva and Chuck Liddell among others would stand a chance against Silva at light heavyweight. YAMMA A FARCE Y! AMMA Pit tried to revolutionize MMA on Friday in Atlantic City N.J. by introducing a new ring.It turned out to be a farce instead. How come people like Bob Meyrowitz can put up a show like that and still ask people to watch it at ringside for Noel Domingo Manila Philippines One of the beauties of the free market is that Meyrowitz can ask whatever he wants for his tickets. No one is forced to buy them however. And judging from the overwhelmingly negative reaction I ve heard to the first YAMMA Pit show I m guessing it might have also been the last. KANG OVERRATED Why is Denis Kang continually ranked No. at middleweight He lost his last fight and he continually fights nobodies. REFEREE CAM With all the referee controversy in the UFC with early stoppages why don t they just go to the third man camera like they had in Pride That way the audience can see what the ref sees and can appreciate why the fight was stopped. Fighters can be knocked out with oneblow and then awakened by another but that s hard to catch if you re not right over him like the ref is. Clive White Plains Md. It s not a bad idea Clive but I think the UFC s production values for its broadcasts are excellent and you get a very good view of a fighter s condition as it is now. INCOMPARABLE SILVA I m curious how Travis Lutter Yushin Okami and DanHenderson can say that even after they all were destroyed by Anderson Silva that he is not the best fighter in the world. All of them claimed that they were the best before their less than minutes of fame put an end to that notion. I also don t see the reason for Anderson needing to go to alternate weight classes to prove himself. Other fighters should have to challenge him. Michael Leone Ramste! in Air Force Base Germany A fighter who isn t confident he s going to win shouldn t be in the cage fighting so I have no complaints with anyone feeling they ll be the one who will defeat Silva. I only think a fighter should move up in weight if he can t safely make the weight he s competing at or if there are no more challenges left in his division. Right now I think Silva belongs at middleweight but that may not be the case for that much longer. FIGHT SOMEONE WILL YOU I don t mean any disrespect to Fedor Emelianenko but how long can he be ranked No. He last fought a top heavyweight in . Since the only ranked fighter he s faced was a middleweight. If Anderson Silva spent the next three years fighting overweight and freakishly tall fighters with only one MMA fight under their belts and then fought a bloated Joe Lauzon he d be laughed at. But Fedor is being ranked based on accomplishments from three years ago. Place Nog in the top spot since he actually fights opponents with ! MMA experience. Jason Sulphur La. Fedor isn t ranked No. in the Yahoo Sports poll. He was ranked fourth in the last poll. He s the most talented heavyweight in the world but he doesn t deserve to be No. for the reasons you cite. If the proposed fight with Tim Sylvia comes off in the summer and Emelianenko wins then perhaps he regains that spot. SPORT OR BUSINESS Why MMA is a sport but the UFC a business Clearly it is a promotion but so are all the other three letterorganizations such as the NFL and NBA. MMA is an individual sport thus comparable standings and stats are out. Even you and your fellow writers acknowledge that belts don t mean very much. But clearly the fighters are athletes. They train virgorously for competition and they win and lose. So clearly there is sport involved here. Can you give some insight as to the future of UFC becoming synonymous with MMA much as NBA is tobasketball and NFL is to football Matt Mroch Sioux Falls S.D. The UFC is a company that puts on MMA fights. Thus it is in the sports business. If there were no wa! y to make money no promoter would ever put on fights. They do it because they know people like to watch it and they ll make money off of it. Finally what is most dangerous this imagery serves as a cover for the lack of realistic analysis of what Tibet could become in the future . Instead ! of attempting to recreate the utopian version of pre s teocracy suited to the recreational aspirations of European and American spiritual tourists the real issues of Tibetan future should be taken into account. What is the demographic social and economic status of Tibetans inside and outside Tibet proper what are the realistic options of its autonomy and its transformation into a modern society who are the big players in the power struggle over Tibet today and how can their interventions be prevented or at least balanced to the best possible outcome of the crisis. In solving questions like these resorting to orientalist mystification can only do harm. After all it s Shangrilanians not the Shangri la that we should focus on. A quick catch up of what s been going on I worked a little on the LC AAC code in the FFmpeg SoC repository though Andreas man has been working on this and has submitted a patch for inclusion in FFmpeg trunk. It is awaiting review as Michael is very busy reviewing this year s SoC qualification tasks. I ve been writing the SBR tool to bolt into the LC AAC decoder and have just a couple more functions to write before I try to glue them all together into a working tool. It s progressing but various things have been going on in my personal life that have slowed development somewhat. Vitor has been working hard on the libavfilter graph syntax and parser. After much discussion I think the syntax is close to being finalised and so the parser implementation will be completed shortly thereafter. I ve signed up as a mentor for the FFmpeg project so I will be wandering around in ffmpeg and ffmpeg devel on irc.freenode.net going by the alias superdump don t ask. though I haven t voluntee! red to mentor any specific task as yet. Being my diplomatic and friendly self I d just like to help out in the whole process. As a random aside the SoC tasks I would most like to see carried out are LC AAC Encoder Snow Improvements Frame level multi threaded decoding API for macroblock based video codecs WMA Pro Decoder to knock that one on the head finally Of course the others are interesting too but I really like the above listed tasks. Electric Bloom Well once again I m the busiest fool I know. Working full time and taking higher level Computer Science classes kind of owns me. I set you people up with a link to a portable version so you can give it a spin without messing any of your firefox settings up. If you use a lot of webapps like gmail google calender meebo google read google maps. Firefox really shines. So give it a spin and ma! ke your inner nerd happy Rhapsody ok why is this here Well I m a HUGE music fan and I just got a day trial and I m loving the fact that I can listen to anything I want. I ve been talking about this to everyone I know just ask Lauren P I know this is OLD news but being an iTunes and Amazonmp user i ve been so bummed about seconds snippets. I m going to try napster when my trial runs out and pick one of the unless I catch wind tha iTunes or amazon do a music buffet service. The lives of aboriginal men New cultural centre exhibit covers a rich history Cornwall Standard Freeholder

Traditions of times past blend with today and tomorrow in a new exhibit at the Ronathahon ni Cultural Centre. The centre formerly the Native North American Travelling College is home to Rohsken rhakehte The parallel between history and today through the lives of Onkwehonwe men until early July. Last week Sarah Herne the museum s co ordinator took a few minutes to chat about the exhibit before it opened on March . It s a natural continuation she explained of previous exhibits. In the summer of we had an exhibit Strength of the Three Sisters The Importance of Women in the Haudenosaunee Confederacy which complemented a workshop which honoured our women Herne said. As well in the spring of we hosted an exhibit honouring our elders. This year it s the guys turn. As Herne took a break from installing the exhibit she was surrounded by hundreds of photographs and artifacts tracing the history of native men in their community. We have everything she said exhausted yet still smiling. ! From traditional attire to farming tools made out of bone to replicated wampum belts. The exhibit focuses on both traditional and non traditional roles of Onkwehone men. Although they have changed greatly over the years many still continue to practise the teachings of ancestors. Ronathahon ni is a neutral ground for culture stated Hearn. We want to focus on the facts and have an objective view. It s important for us to remain neutral. The exhibit traces the history of the people from hunting and fishing through to the fur trade farming and then industry such as ironworking. Advertisement Technically we ve been dated back years but we believe we go back to the beginning of Creation said Hearn. Our people were very active in making items out of natural resources really creating something out of nothing such as wooden bowls snowshoes lacrosse sticks and farming implements. Other areas of the exhibit include medicines and rites of passage the Great Law history and issues. Hearn! placed special emphasis on demonstrating how both the new and old mesh especially in culture and religion. Things like medicine rites of passage ceremonies and song affect everyone she stated. It s really important to exhibit both the traditional Longhouse versus non traditional life ways. We all live within Akwesasne and are all part of the Confederacy. Rohsken rrhakehte encompasses an extensive exhibit that takes the visitor from traditional ideologies through to activism in society. In addition said Hearn a call was made out to the community to honour men in their own lives today. We need to understand our culture in every aspect of our life whether it s social political environmental physical or spiritual. It permeates through everything Hearn said.
