But one thing it didn t envision was music for white supremacists. And the company says it will block any traffic redirected to its site from a white supremacist s blog. Believe me a white supremacist group is the last t! hing in the world we want to be associated with said Ed Seeger chairman and co founder of American Media Services Interactive which is based in Mount Pleasant. The company s offerings include TheRADIO.com which streams channels of music to the Internet. A link to the site appears on the blog of Hal Turner a white supremacist from North Bergen N.J. who organized a rally of supremacist groups in Kalamazoo Mich. last year and a neo Nazi rally in Kingston N.Y. in . Turner ended his Internet radio show last summer but continues a blog under the heading Honest talk in a time of universal deceit. As all of you know there is a special place in my heart for radio with me having given years of my life to that endeavor he wrote in a Nov. entry. At that time Turner wrote I am pleased to announce the launch of The Radio.com and added if you like this and appreciate it perhaps you ll consider sending a small donation Turner s address followed. American Media said Monday it was considerin! g legal action because the blog made it appear Turner had developed TheRADIO.com. After being contacted by The Associated Press Turner changed the blog late Monday. It now reads even though I do not own or operate TheRadio.com if you like that I turned you on to this information perhaps you ll consider sending a small donation Turner wrote in an e mail to the AP that having now reread what I originally wrote I can see how it could have been misunderstood. I apologize for the possible misunderstanding. He added he routinely solicits contributions but has received none as a result of TheRADIO.com link. I have no desire whatsoever to profit off the hard work of others he wrote. Seeger said he was alarmed that a white supremacist was linking to the site. The irony there is of course that on TheRADIO.com we have several sites that feature black artists he said. James Aquilina a former federal cyber crimes prosecutor in Los Angeles and managing director of computer forensics and consulting firm Stroz Friedberg LLC said it s not unusual for people to! seek to profit from others Web sites. This happens all the time on the Internet when people try to take credit or solicit a donation or otherwise for Internet activity they are not responsible for he said. She supported Iranian women s rights before the Islamic revolution forced her family into exile. Imams have issued fatwas against Noor fans but few Gazans care. Amer Kihail a slender man with an elastic hangdog face runs the store called New Sound. Do Gazans living under Hamas buy much Western music or many Western movies Mr. Kihail looked baffled and maybe even a little annoyed by the question. Of course he said. Ruled by Hamas penned in by Israel grappling with daily shortages of food and supplies Gazans need an escape. Culture turns out to be not just an afterthought but many say essential to surviving here. Especially for young Gazans what s on satellite television and the In! ternet on tapes and compact discs is a window to the world beyond the armored checkpoints and a link to Arab society elsewhere and crucially to the West. And in what is clearly an emerging struggle within Hamas between political pragmatists trying to consolidate their new authority and extremists who have begun pressing a more fundamentalist agenda culture is a central battleground for control of Gaza. A release from confinement and hardship even mundane television becomes freighted in this context. As much as the Pakistan Afghan frontier this is a front line in the so called global war on terror in which anti Western strains of Islam rub up against the social and cultural proclivities of many perhaps most Muslims. How the West fares improbable as it might seem may depend as much on whether people in this forsaken strip of land and elsewhere in this part of the world are watching Zohan and Dr. Phil as on skirmishes in the mountains south of Kabul. What s happening in a humble Gazan music store it turns out has repercussions across the region a! nd beyond. Gaza isn t what you might imagine culturally speaking. Like the West Bank it occupies a special place in the Middle East Gazans may loathe Israel but have worked there or spent years in Israeli prisons and while they haven t taken up Jewish culture they ve experienced Western life as many other Arabs haven t. This has encouraged a sensibility that until lately anyway had a moderating effect on religion and society. Not far from New Sound booksellers in this city s ancient market hawk sex instruction manuals alongside yellowing paperbacks from Egypt interpreting the Koran. Arabic translations of old Harlequin romances are laid out on folding tables cheek by jowl with joke books in which Muslim characters do borscht belt shtick. Wife at a psychiatrist s office My husband talks when he s sleeping. What should I do Psychiatrist Can you give him a chance to talk when he s awake A skinny boy with bad teeth manning the book tables the other morning grinned when a woman ! came by and thumbed through What to Do if You Have Weaknesses in Sex. Pointing to the religious books she asked Do many people buy those Sure the boy said. These too she asked gesturing toward a stack of flimsy softcovers with a picture of the young Cheryl Tiegs on the front. Oh yes he said. That evening in the garden of a family restaurant called Roots No Weapon Please a sign said on the front door patrons munched salads and gazed at Friends on a big screen. Everybody was waiting for Noor. As they do throughout much of the Arab world these days the streets here clear each night when Noor comes on. A Turkish Dallas centered around the title character and her rich Muslim family enduring the usual soap opera imbroglios the show has become so wildly popular that imams in Saudi Arabia and Gaza have lately issued fatwas against anyone who watches it. Naturally nobody pays attention. Even Hamas tunes in. Imad Alifranji is helping to start up Alquds a new Islamic television station Gaza s second after Al Aqsa Hamas s station which recently devoted th! ree full days of programming to stories about promising Gazan high school students. LOUIS Chicago Cubs pitchers Rich Harden and Carlos Zambrano remained on track for starts later this week good news for the struggling NL Central leaders. Zambrano Harden With Harden we ve given him a nice rest for two turns and hopefully he ll finish up strong Piniella said before the Cubs lost again on Tuesday. Zambrano is basically the same thing. Sure it s a relief. Not only do you lose two starting pitchers but you lose two middle men. Harden with a . ERA since joining the Cubs on July in a six player deal with Oakland is set to rejoin the rotation on Thursday. He missed one start with discomfort in his arm. Zambrano was scheduled to go Saturday after missing one turn. Harden threw a side session on Monday and Zambrano threw Tuesday. Zambrano with a . Mainly he chose not to be concerned. You know the amazing thing about managing a baseball team If you re a little bit of a worry wart you have something to worry about every single day Piniella said. Halfway through the year you need a psychiatrist and by the end of the year you need a bed. So no I m not concerned about anything. Not even about the team s recent woes. Piniella noted the Cubs face the three teams chasing them in the Central St. Louis Houston and Milwaukee the next nine games. We ve gotten ourselves in good position. Ronny Cedeno had been set to start the series opener and hit eighth. They gave him a couple of IVs and he s still having a little lingering effect on that Piniella said. The doctor assured him everything was fine. Piniella also said he d give struggling Kosuke Fukudome batting . in his last games at least one start in the Cardinals series after leaving him out of the lineup for the third time in five games. We re just giving him time off to relax a little bit more than anything Piniella said. The Cubs recalled outfielder Felix Pie from Triple A Iowa and purchased the contract of right hander Randy Wells from Iowa moving pitcher Jon Lieber to the day disabled list to make room on the man roster.
